Nam June Paik was a Korean American artist, a pioneer and some consider him as the founder of video art. He was participating in the Fluxus movement and \u00a0credited with inventing the term \u2018electronic superhighway\u2019.<\/p>\n

Tv- Buddha\u00a0( first designed in 1974)<\/p>\n

From the website of Media Art Net:\u00a0“The Buddha perpetually gazes at the TV screen, on which he sees an image of himself recorded by the closed-circuit camera. \u2013 past and present gaze upon each other in an encounter between Oriental deity and Western media.”<\/p>\n

My fascination lies in the varied layers of\u00a0 interpretations of this work. Some say that old and new, others see East and West, or real \u00a0and illusion facing each other in the\u00a0two buddhas. The question of originality in the context of mass-media appeals to me the most from the argument triggered by this piece.<\/p>\n

The idea of the world wide web was only formulating at the end of the 70s, so\u00a0it wasn’t an influencing factor in the making of this installation. However the\u00a0a contemporary spectator can’t really escape internet based thinking and the Tv-Buddha\u00a0involuntarily becomes\u00a0re-interpreted.\u00a0\u00a0In relation to the topic of “remote spacing”, what\u00a0appears to be\u00a0interesting is the use of “remote-communication technology” (live video) in order to keep the image of the transmitter close. The sender in itself is the receiver, physically\u00a0there is no need to overcome any distance ,\u00a0so the used tools aren’t entirely fulfil their purpose, therefore their role is\u00a0more\u00a0conceptual than functional. The presence of\u00a0streaming, instead of \u00a0overcoming a physical space, \u00a0creates a mental space where the spectator’s thoughts\u00a0appear.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
